Course Details
Beginning four decades ago, the West Course at the Country Club of Birmingham, one of two Donald Ross creations, consistently earned a place on Golf Digest's 100 Greatest list. However, its ranking plummeted in 1984. Seeking to restore the Ross legacy, Pete Dye persuaded the club to entrust the task to his younger son, P.B. Taking drastic measures, P.B. treated the turf with grass-killing chemicals, transforming it into a bleak landscape marked by clouds of red dust as his bulldozer reshaped every aspect of the course. The result? A radical departure from Ross's vision, sparking discontent among some members, who shunned Pete for years. A decade ago, Pete reconciled with the club, vowing to rectify the situation. Collaborating with a new team, he tempered P.B.'s bold alterations, rendering the course more playable. While it may not fully recapture Ross's essence, Birmingham West now stands as a genuine Pete Dye creation.
